The Oppression Of Sayeda Faatima (s.a) I

Virtues of Sayeda Faatima (s.a)

In this article we will be focusing on the life and martyrdom of the highest lady in the history of Islam, the daughter of the last and final Messenger of Allah (swt), 'Sayeda Faatima Al-Zahra' (s.a). The Holy Prophet (saw) placed Bibi Faatima (s.a) in the highest grandeur, she (s.a) was undoubtedly an examplary woman for all nations. Upon the death of her father the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), Bibi Faatima (s.a) suffered severe distress and misfortunes. She (s.a) received much aversion and cruelty from those who usurped the Islamic leadership from Imam Alee (a.s) namely, Aboo Bakr and Umar. Some past and present historians and authors have concealed this matter intentionally. However, in this article we shall investigate circumstances that surrounded her (s.a) martyrdom.

In this section we will be looking to cover:

'The Merits Of Sayeda Faatima (s.a)'
As Recorded In Saheeh Al-Bukhari

Fath ul-Bari fi Sharh Saheeh al-Bukhari is the most valued commentary of Saheeh Bukhari written by ibn Hajr Asqalani. The following is reported in Bukhari under the chapter of 'The Virtues of Sayeda Faatima (s.a)':

Narrated Aboo Al-Walid from ibn Oyaina from Amr ibn Dinar from ibn Abi Mulaika from Al-Meswar ibn Al-Makhrama who said: The Prophet (saw) said: "Faatima is part of me, so whoever makes her angry makes me angry."

Bukhari has stated in the chapter, 'The virtues of Bibi Faatima (s.a)' that she (s.a), is the daughter of the messenger of Allah (saw), her mother is Bibi Khadijah (s.a), she was born in Islam and some say before the emergence of Islam. Imam Alee (a.s) married her in the second year of the migration in the battle of Badr. She (s.a) bore children and died in the eleventh year of migration, six months after the Prophet (saw) death. This is narrated through 'A'isha and is authentic. It is also said that she died after eight months, some say after three months, some say after two months and it is also said that she died one month after the Prophet (saw). She died when she was 24 years old. It is also said 21, 25, 26 and 30. The virtues of Faatima (s.a) will be covered in the biography of her mother Bibi Khadijah (s.a) in Sirat al-Nabawiyyah. And the most strong proof of the superiority of Bibi Faatima (s.a) over the women of her time and after that, is that the Prophet (saw) said about her that she is the Mistress of the ladies of all the worlds except Bibi Maryam (s.a).

Narrated Zakaria ibn Zahid from Feras from Al-Sho'bi from Masrooq from A'isha who said: The Prophet (saw) said in his illness in which he died: "Oh Faatima (s.a)! Are you not pleased with the fact that you are the Mistress of the ladies of all the worlds, the Mistress of the ladies of this 'Ummah' (nation) and the Mistress of the ladies of all the believers?!"

Narrated A'isha " Faatima (s.a) came walking and her gait resembled the gait of the Prophet (saw). The Prophet (saw) said: "Welcome, O my daughter!" Then he made her sit on his right or on his left side, and then he told her a secret and she started weeping. I asked her, "Why are you weeping?" He again told her a secret and she started laughing. I said, "I never saw happiness so near to sadness as I saw today." I asked her what the Prophet (saw) had told her. She (s.a) said, "I would never disclose the secret of Allah's Apostle (saw)." When the Prophet (saw) died, I asked her about it. She replied. The Prophet (saw) said: 'Every year Gabriel (a.s) used to revise the Qur'aan with me once only, but this year he has done so twice. I think this portends my death, and you will be the first of my family to join me.' So I started weeping. Then he (saw) said: "Don't you like to be the Mistress of all the ladies of Paradise or the Mistress of all the lady believers? So I laughed for that."

Ahmad ibn Hanbal:

Narrated Hussain ibn Muhammad from Israeel from Maysara ibn Habib from Al-Menhal ibn Amr from Zer ibn Hoyaish from Hudhaifa who said: "My mother asked me: 'How long is it since you met the Prophet (saw)?' I said: Since such and such, so she got angry and cursed me.' So I said to her: 'Let me go to the Prophet (saw) and pray the Maghrib prayer with him and then I will not leave him until he asks forgiveness for you and me. So I went to the Prophet (saw) and prayed the Maghrib with him, then the Prophet (saw) kept praying until Isha, then I stood up and walked towards him, then someone came to him and talked to him and then went, so I kept walking towards him, then he (saw) heard my voice and said: 'Who is that?' said: Hudhaifa, he said: 'What do you want?' So I told him the story, then he said: 'May Allah forgive you and your mother!' And said: 'Did you see that one who talked to me a moment ago?' I said: 'Yes!' He (saw) said: He was an angel (a.s) who had never came down to earth before this night, he had asked Allah (swt) to let him come down to me and salute me and give me the glad tidings that Imam Al-Hassan (a.s) and Imam Al-Hussain (a.s) are the Masters of the youth in paradise, and that Bibi Faatimah (s.a) is the chief of the ladies of paradise."

Al-Bukhari:

Narrated Adam from Sho'ba and narrated Amr from Sho'ba from Amr ibn Morra from Morra from Abi Musa Al-Ash'ari who said: The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "Many men reached the level of perfection, but no woman reached such a level except Bibi Maryam (s.a) daughter of Imran and Bibi (s.a) Aasia wife of Pharaoh and the superiority of A'isha to other women, is like the superiority of Tharid (meat and bread dish) to other meals."

Source: Saheeh Al-Bukhari. Pg. # 924.

The above narration appears with exactly the same chain of transmission in Al-Tabari's Tafsir, but with no mention of A'isha being from the chief women of paradise.

Al-Tabari:

Narrated Al-Mothanna from Adam Al-Asqalani from Sho'ba from Amr ibn Morra who said: I heard from Morra Al-Hamdani a narration from Abi Musa Al-Ash'ari who said: The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "Many men reached the level of perfection, but no woman reached such a level except Bibi Maryam (s.a) and Bibi Aasia (s.a) wife of Pharaoh and Bibi Khadijah (s.a) daughter of Khuwaylid and Bibi Faatimah (s.a) daughter of Muhammad (saw)."

Source: Tafsir Jamehul Bayan Al-Tabari. Vol. 5, Pg. # 395.

As we have observed, the narration has been distorted in order to include A'isha, while excluding Bibi Khadijah (s.a) and Bibi Faatimah (s.a). We will present some more narrations before your very eyes to show you as to how they have cunningly distorted the Hadeeth.

Al-Thahlabi:

Narrated Al Hassan ibn Muhammad from Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Shayba from Ubaidullah Ahmad Ibn Mansoor Al-Kesahi from Muhammad ibn Abdul Jabbar famous as Sandol Al-Hamdani from Aboo Usama from Sho'ba from Amr ibn Morra from Abi Musa Al-Ash'ari who said: "The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "Many men reached the level of perfection, but no woman reached such a level except four, Bibi Aasia (s.a) daughter of Mozahim wife of Pharaoh, Bibi Maryam (s.a) daughter of Imran, Bibi Khadijah (s.a) daughter of Khuwaylid and Bibi Faatimah (s.a) daughter of Muhammad (saw), and the superiority of A'isha to other women, is like the superiority of Tharid (meat and bread dish) to other meals."

Source: Tafsir Al-Kashf wal Bayan. Vol. 9, Pg. # 353.

Al-Zila’ei:

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "Many men reached the level of perfection, but no woman reached such a level except four. Aasia (s.a) daughter of Mozahim wife of Pharaoh, Maryam (s.a) daughter of Imran and Khadijah (s.a) daughter of  Khuwaylid and Faatimah (s.a) daughter of Muhammad (saw), and the superiority of A'isha to other women, is like the superiority of Tharid (meat and bread dish) to other meals."

Al-Zila'ei: This narration is narrated by Aboo Na'eem in Al-Helya in the biography of Amr ibn Morra and said: Narrated Sulaiman Ibn Ahmad from Yusuf Al Qazi from Amr ibn Marzooq from Sho'ba from Amr ibn Morra heard Morra narrating from Aboo Musa who said: The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "Many men reached the level of perfection, but no woman reached such a level except four..." and with this chain and content narrated also by Al-Thahlabi in his Tafsir

Footnote:

Sulaiman ibn Ahmad he is Al-Tabarani: He is Trustworthy.

Yusuf ibn Yaqoob ibn Isma’eel ibn Hemad ibn Zaid ibn Darham, Al-Khateeb said: 'He was

Trustworthy, pious, modest, appalling presence,' and Al-Dhahabi said: 'Trustworthy.'

Amr ibn Marzooq Al-Baheli Aboo Uthman Al-Basri, ibn Hajar said: 'He is Trustworthy and
learned, he had some mistakes.'

Sho'ba is Trustworthy.

Amr ibn Morra Al-Jomali is Trustworthy, he did not hear from anyone one of the companions, so this Hadeeth is Mursal 'hurried.'

Source: Takhreej Ahadeeth of Al-Kashaf. Vol. 2, Pg. # 1083.

Note: This Hadeeth is not Mursal 'hurried' because Amr ibn Morra has not narrated it directly from Aboo Musa rather through his father Morra from Aboo Musa, as it is clear in this chain and in Bukhari and other books.

Now we will present how the same narration has been distorted by ibn Kathir. He has taken the narration to complete the four women whilst juggling them around just so that A'isha is mentioned and hence not left out!

Ibn Kathir:

Narrated ibn Mardawaih through Sho’ba from Muawiya ibn Qorra from his father who said: The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "Many men reached the level of perfection, but no woman reached such a level except three!!! Bibi Maryam (s.a) daughter of Imran and Aasia (s.a) daughter Mozahim wife of Pharaoh and Bibi Khadijah (s.a) daughter of  Khuwaylidand the superiority of A'isha to other women, is like the superiority of Tharid (meat and bread dish) to other meals."

Source: Tafsir ibn Kathir. Vol. 2, Pg. # 40.

Ibn Jarir said: Narrated Al-Mothanna from Adam Al-Asqalani from Sho'ba from Amr ibn Morra who said: I heard from Morra Al-Hamdani a narration from Abi Musa Al-Ash'ari who said: The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "Many men reached the level of perfection, but no woman reached such a level except Bibi Maryam (s.a) and Bibi Aasia (s.a) wife of Pharaoh."

Source: Tafsir ibn Kathir. Vol. 2, Pg. # 41.

As mentioned earlier, the Hadeeth of ibn Jarir Al-Tabari from his Tafsir recorded the four women as: Bibi Maryam (s.a), Bibi Aasia (s.a), Bibi Khadijah (s.a) and Bibi Faatima (s.a). However, ibn Kathir suffered from indigestion when the name of the Prophets (saw) daughter Faatima (s.a) was mentioned, and hence did not include her (s.a) at all in the list.
Now, here we have ibn Taymiyyah testifying that only four women reached a level of perfection.

Ibn Taymiyyah:

And the Prophet (saw) said: "Many men reached the level of perfection, but no woman reached such a level except four, So truthful men are many."

Source: Minhaj Al-Sunnah. Vol. 5, Pg. # 28.

Ibn Taymiyyah:

And this is an Saheeh (Authentic) narration from the Prophet (saw) who said: "Many men reached the level of perfection, but no woman reached such a level except four, So truthful men are many."

Source: Al Esteqama. Vol. 2, Pg. # 156.

There is no ambiguity in that someone has distorted these narrations in order to include A'isha in the list. On some occasions, Bibi Faatima (s.a) has been removed, in others it may be that Bibi Khadijah (s.a) has been excluded or even both! Likewise, there are narrations which have mentioned all four women and A'isha has been mentioned as the fifth of them! It is obvious from the narration, particularly the part: "The superiority of A'isha to other women, is like the superiority of Tharid (meat and bread dish) to other meals." is not part of the original matn 'content' of the Hadeeth rather, it is an addition. It is also not in conjunction with other corroborating narrations where it specifically mentions Four women i.e. "Four most superior women in paradise..." and "It suffices four women...". We shall let the readers decide as to what has happened with these narrations.

Objection One:

Narrations in praise of Sayeda Faatima (s.a) are narrated by A'isha. This is a strange action by a Shi'ee. It only supports the popular view that A'isha and Faatima (s.a) were indeed close.

Response One:

If A'isha mentions the merits of Sayeda Faatimah (s.a), there is no reason to deny she did so because those merits were sound and observable. Non-Muslim scholars write positively about Prophet Muhammad (saw), and then insidiously add further points to discredit him. This is how they are able to maintain a sentiment of impartiality when covering their real agenda. The same is undoubtedly true of A'isha. After all, "loving" Faatimah (s.a) and then trying to kill her (s.a) husband and shooting arrows on her son (a.s), require little comment. Why did the "love" that A'isha had to Sayeda Faatimah (s.a) not substantiate in her actions?

Superiority Of A'isha Above All Women?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

O Prophet! Why do you forbid that which Allah has allowed to you, seeking to please your wives And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Allah has already ordained for you (O men) the absolution from your oaths. And Allah is your Protector and He is the All-Knower, the All-Wise. And (remember) when the Prophet disclosed a matter in confidence to one of his wives, then she told it. And Allah made it known to him; he informed part thereof and left a part. Then when he told her thereof, she said: "Who told you this?'' He said: "The All-Knower, the All-Aware has told me." If you two turn in repentance to Allah, your hearts are indeed so inclined; but if you help one another against him, then verily, Allah is his Protector, and Jibreel, and the righteous among the believers; and after that the angels are his helpers. Maybe his Lord, if he divorces you, will give him instead of you, wives better than you - submitting, believers, obedient, turning to Allah in repentance, worshipping Allah sincerely, Sa'ihat, previously married, and virgins.

O you who believe! Protect yourselves and your families against a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern (and) severe, who disobey not the commands they receive from Allah, but do that which they are commanded.) It will be said in the Hereafter) O you who disbelieve! Make no excuses this Day! You are being requited only for what you used to do. O you who believe! Turn to Allah with sincere repentance! It may be that your Lord will expiate from you your sins, and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow the Day that Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believe with him. Their light will run forward before them and in their right hands. They will say: "Our Lord! Keep perfect our light for us and grant us forgiveness. Verily, You are Able to do all things.''

O Prophet! Strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be severe against them; their abode will be Hell, and worst indeed is that destination. Allah sets forth an example for those who disbelieve: the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut. They were under two of our righteous servants, but they both betrayed them. So, they availed them not against Allah and it was said: "Enter the Fire along with those who enter!"

O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any of the other women, provided that you keep from disobedience to God in reverence for Him and piety (and, therefore, act with awareness of your special status). So (even more than other believing women) do not be complaisant in your speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease should be moved to desire, but speak in an honorable way

Holy Qur'aan {33.32}

The Prophet (saw) disclosed a secret, in confidence, to one of his wives. But she betrayed him, and disclosed the secret to another wife. Then Allah (swt) informed him of the betrayal. Our Lord orders both women to repent, and informed us that their hearts had become CROOKED. Well, after sharing the secret, both of them plotted against His Prophet (saw)! Allah (swt) then informed both wives that He might order him to divorce them and some of his wives that were like them, and replace them with better women. These better women were Muslims, believers, obedient, penitent, worshipping, and given to fasting. So, who were these two women?

Al-Bukhari:

Allah's Messenger (saw) was fond of honey and sweet edible things and (it was his habit) that after finishing the Asr prayer he would visit his wives and stay with one of them at that time. Once he went to Hafsa, the daughter of Umar and stayed with her more than usual. I (A'isha) got jealous and asked the reason for that. I was told that a lady of her folk had given her a skin filled with honey as a present, and that she made a syrup from it and gave it to the Prophet (saw) to drink (and that was the reason for the delay). I said, "By Allah (swt)! We will play a trick on him (to prevent him from doing so)." So I said to Sa'da bint Zam'a, "The Prophet (saw) will approach you, and when he comes near you, say: 'Have you taken Maghafir (a bad-smelling gum)?' He will say, 'No.' Then say to him: 'Then what is this bad smell which I smell from you?' He will say to you, 'Hafsa made me drink honey syrup.' Then say: Perhaps the bees of that honey had sucked the juice of the tree of Al-Urfut.' I shall also say the same. O you, Safiyya, say the same." Later Sa'da said, "By Allah (swt)! As soon as he (the Prophet (saw)) stood at the door, I was about to say to him what you had ordered me to say because I was afraid of you." So when the Prophet (saw) came near Sa'da, she said to him, "O Allah's Messenger (saw)! Have you taken Maghafir?" He said, "No." She said, "Then what is this bad smell which I detect on you?" He said, "Hafsa made me drink honey syrup." She said, "Perhaps its bees had sucked the juice of Al-Urfut tree." When he came to me, I also said the same, and when he went to Safiyya, she also said the same. And when the Prophet (saw) again went to Hafsa, she said, 'O Allah's Messenger (saw)! Shall I give you more of that drink?" He said, "I am not in need of it." Sa'da said, "By Allah! We deprived him (of it)." I said to her, "Keep quiet." '

Al-Bukhari:

Narrated ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both: I wanted to ask Umar. So, I said: "O Amir al-Mo'mineen! Who were these two women who PLOTTED AGAINST the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him?" I could not finish my statement when he said, "A'isha and Hafsah."

Your hearts have committed sins." Narrated Mujahid: "We used to think that his Statement (Your hearts have CROOKED) is an easy matter until we heared the Qirah of ibn Mas'ood (If you both (women) repent to Allah (swt), FOR YOUR HEARTS HAVE DEVIATED)." Narrated Qatadah: (Your hearts have become CROOKED) means your hearts have SWERVED. Narrated Al-Dahak: (Your hearts have become CROOKED) means, "(Your hearts have) DEVIATED." Narrated Sufyan (Al-Thawri): (Your hearts have become CROOKED) means "Your hearts have DEVIATED."

Al-Shawkani:

{If you both (women) repent to Allah (swt), for your hearts have become crooked} The addressees were A'isha and Hafsah. It means, {If you both (women) turn in repentance to Allah (swt)} because you have done something that makes repentance obligatory upon you; and the meaning of {saghat [become crooked]} is to swerve from the haqq. This means that, "You both (women) love what the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, hates, which was the disclosure of the (secret) talk." Ibn Abbas said about his statement, {Your hearts have become crooked}: "It means (your hearts have} deviated." Ibn Al-Mundhir narrated that he said: "It means (your hearts have) swerved."

This settles it. A'isha and Hafsah were the two wives of the Prophet (saw) whose hearts had deviated from the truth, and who plotted against him (saw). Moreover, as the Holy Qur'aan informs us, there were Muslim women better than both of them and all the Prophet's wives in the Ummah during his lifetime. This basically trashes all those so-called "Authentic" Sunni hadeeth placing A'isha above all other women!

The language of the Book of Allah (swt) goes even deeper when it says:

 عَسَى رَبُّهُ إِن طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَن يُبْدِلَهُ أَزْوَجاً خَيْراً مِّنكُنَّ مُسْلِمَـتٍ مُّؤْمِنَـتٍ قَـنِتَـتٍ تَـئِبَـتٍ عَـبِدَتٍ سَـئِحَـتٍ ثَيِّبَـتٍ وَأَبْكَاراً

"It may well be that if he divorces you, Allah (swt) will give him in your place better wives, who are Muslims, who are believers and obedient, penitent, worshipping, and given to fasting, be they previously married or virgins."

Holy Qur'aan {66:5}

What does this mean? Does it mean that A'isha and Hafsah and some of the other wives like them were not Muslims, believers, obedient, penitent, worshipping and given to fasting? If they had all these qualities as the so-called, 'Ahl ul-Sunnah' claim, then the verse is meaningless! Allah (swt) here is highlighting the qualities that these better women had, which made them better than A'isha, Hafsah and other wives like them. The only logical conclusion from this is that both of them, as well as the other wives who possessed the same characteristics, lacked those qualities. In other words, the women outside (and perhaps the wives of the Prophet (saw) that were not like A'isha and Hafsah) had these qualities, which made them superior to these two plotters.

Aboo Yahla:

Narrated Aboo Yahla through a chain that has no problem and also Aboo Shaykh ibn Hayyan through a good, strong chain from A'isha who said: "My luggage was light and I was riding a fast camel, but Safia's luggage was weighty and her camel was slow which caused the caravan to move slower. The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "Put the luggage of A'isha on Safia's camel and put Safia's luggage on Aisha's camel, so that the caravan can move faster." Aisha said: When I heard this I said: "O servants of Allah (swt)! This Jewish woman has conquered us over the Messenger of Allah (saw)!" Then the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "O Umm Abdullah! Your luggage is light and the luggage of Safia is weighty, so we put your luggage on her camel and her luggage on your camel." She said: I (A'isha) then said (to the Prophet (saw)), "Are you not the one who pretends to be the Messenger of Allah (saw)?!" He smiled and said, "Are you in doubt O Ummul Mo'mineen, O Umm Abd Allah (i.e. A'isha)?" I said (to him), "Are you not the one who pretends to be the Messenger of Allah (saw)?! So why don't you do justice?!" Aboo Bakr heard what I said, and he was strict. So, he came to me and slapped me on my face. As a result, the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "Do not do it O Aboo Bakr!" Aboo Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah (saw) did you not hear what she said?" The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "When the women become jealous they cannot distinguish between the bottom of the valley and its top."

Footnote: Salihi Al-Shaami says: Its chain is Jayyid (Good) through Abi Yahla and Ahmad has narrated it with a chain that has no problem from Safia.

Source: Subul Al-Huda Wa Rashad. Vol. 9, Pg. # 71.

This incident which took place during the farewell Hajj of the Prophet (saw) requires no further comments. A'isha and Hafsah did not just stop there, they continued to hurt the Prophet of Allah (saw) on many occasions during his (saw) life.

Muslim ibn Hajjaj:

I entered upon A'isha and said, "O A'isha bint Aboo Bakr! I have heard that you HURT the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him?" She said, "What is my business with you, O ibn Al-Khattab? Mind your own defect." I then entered upon Hafsah bint Umar and said to her, "O Hafsah! I have heard that you hurt the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. Verily, I have known that the Messenger of Allah (saw) does not love you. If not for me, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, would have divorced you."

Source: Saheeh Muslim. Kitab Al-Talaq. Pg. # 681, H. # 1479.

Both A'isha and Hafsah plotted against the Messenger of Allah (saw) and hurt him! Indeed, it is only people whose hearts have truly deviated from the truth that could do such a detestable thing. The Holy Qur'aan gives a clear verdict upon such people which includes both these women:

إِنَّ الَّذينَ يُؤْذُونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ لَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ فِي الدُّنْيا وَالْآخِرَةِ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ عَذاباً مُهينا.

Verily, those who hurt Allah and His Messenger, Allah has CURSED them in this world and in the Hereafter, and has prepared for them a humiliating torment.

Holy Qur'aan {33:57}

No wonder Umar wanted to behead them both!

Al-Qushayri:

It has been narrated that when Umar b. Al-Khattab heard something from it (i.e. what A'isha and Hafsah did), he said to the Messenger of Allah (saw), "If you order me, I will cut the necks of both of them!"

Source: Tafseer Al-Qushayri. Vol. 3, Pg. # 334.

Can we really say, in these circumstances, that A'isha and Hafsah stood by the Messenger of Allah (saw) in belief? Does it not seem fairly obvious that they were actually against him? Why would anyone who claims to love and submit themselves to the Prophet (saw) more than they do to themselves deliberately plot against him and hurt him? Can someone whose heart has deviated from the haqq be said to have been by the side of the Messenger of Allah (saw) in eeman? Could anyone whom the Prophet (saw) disliked have been with him in eeman? Would anyone with eeman betray the Prophet (saw) by disclosing his secret to others? It is to be stressed that the heart is actually the abode of eeman. If it finds no place there, then hypocrisy or kufr reigns and this affair is clear in the Holy Qur'aan:

قَالَتِ الْأَعْرَابُ آمَنَّا ۖ قُل لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا وَلَـٰكِن قُولُوا أَسْلَمْنَا وَلَمَّا يَدْخُلِ الْإِيمَانُ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ

The bedouins say: "We believe." Say: "You believe not but you only say, 'We have surrendered (in Islam),' for eeman has not yet entered your hearts."

Holy Qur'aan {49:14}

Therefore, for the so-called, 'Ahl ul-Sunnah' to establish that both A'isha and Hafsah were believers, they must first prove that both had eeman in their hearts. However, we see that the Holy Qur'aan does not seem to support that view. Allah (swt) very clearly informs us of what happens when the heart becomes deviated:

It is He Who has sent down to you (Muhammad) the Book. In it are explicit verses. They are the foundations of the Book. And the other verses are allegorical. As for those in whose HEARTS there is a deviation, they follow the allegorical verses, seeking fitnah and seeking its tawil. But none knows its ta'wil except Allah and those firmly rooted in knowledge. They (i.e. those firmly rooted in knowledge) say: We believe in it; the whole of it is from our Lord.” And none receive admonition except men of understanding.

Holy Qur'aan {3:7}

This is exactly what happened in the wars fought by A'isha and Mu'awiyah against Imam Alee (a.s). They were exercising incorrect Ta'wil of the Book of Allah (swt) and thereby seeking fitnah in the Ummah!

Al-Albani:

Narrated Aboo Sa'id narrated: We were sitting, waiting for the Mesenger of Allah, peace be upon him. Then he came to us from the room of one of his wives. So, we stood with him. But his shoe broke, and he appointed Alee (a.s) to stay behind to repair it. Then, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, walked and we walked with him. He (the Prophet (saw)) stood up, waiting for him (i.e. Alee (a.s)) and we stood with him. Then he said: "There is among you one who will fight over the ta'wil of this Qur'aan, just as I fought over its tanzil (revelation)." Each of us wished it was him, and among us were Aboo Bakr and Umar. But he (the Prophet (saw)) said: "No. He is only the repairer of the shoe" referring to Alee, may Allah be pleased with him. We went to him (i.e. Alee (a.s)) to give him the good news. But he responded as though he had earlier heard it.

We know through this reality, that A'isha, Mu'awiyah and the Khawarij did indeed have deviation in their hearts which contained false eeman. As for those in whose hearts is deviation, they follow the allegorical verses seeking fitnah and seeking its Ta'wil! Verily, Allah (swt) and His Messenger (saw) convey nothing but the truth. Indeed, the trio caused a great fitnah in the Ummah, one that continues to cause destruction at present!

Ahmad ibn Hanbal:

Narrated ibn Umar: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, came out of the house of A'isha and said, "The head of kufr is from right here, from where the horn of Shaytan will appear."

Source: Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal. Vol. 8, Pg. # 373, H. # 4751.

This hadeeth exposes the widely circulated lie that the Prophet (saw) was buried in A'isha's room. Rather, the Messenger of Allah (saw) was buried in his own personal room, and A'isha continued to live in her room from which she emerged as the horn of Shaytan.

Al-Bukhari:

The Hadeeth can be found in Saheeh Al-Bukhari under the chapter:

'On what happened in the houses of the wives of the Prophet (saw).'

Narrated Abd Allah The Prophet, peace be upon him, rose to deliver a sermon and pointed to A'isha's room and said, "Right here is the fitnah, right here is the fitnah, right here is the fitnah, from where the horn of Shaytan will appear."

Source: Saheeh Bukhari. Pg. # 765, H. # 3104.

These hadeeth describe A'isha as the fitnah and the head of Kufr and her room described as where the horn of Shaytan would appear in the future. The implication is that she never repented, and her heart remained deviated and devoid of eeman till her death. Through her abuse of the Qur'aan and disastrous ta'wil, she most certainly later emerged from her house as what the Prophet (saw) rightfully described, as the horn of Shaytan. Thousands of innocent lives were taken at her orders whilst great fitnah was inflicted upon the Ummah.

So, did A'isha share the same eeman with the Prophet (saw) which he (saw) would often refer to? As it is evidenced, this was something absolutely impossible, since this heart of hers was very much so filled with deviation. Moreover, with her inglorious episode in human history, especially the thousands of Muslim lives lost at her word, it is equally beyond reason to put her under the beautiful cloak of the Verse of Muhammad (saw).

Some of the so-called 'Ahl ul-Sunnah' might wonder why the Prophet Muhammad (saw) did not divorce A'isha despite knowing of her reality. It has been manifested so obviously that she, and Hafsah were mirror images of the wives of Prophet's Nuh (a.s) and Lut (a.s) who betrayed and opposed their husbands. Allah (swt) says:

Allah sets forth an example for those who disbelieve, the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut. They were under two of our righteous slaves, but they both betrayed so they (Nuh and Lut) benefited them not, against Allah, and it was said: “Enter the Fire along with those who enter!”

Holy Qur'aan {66:10}

Both Prophets (a.s) were married to evil women, and hence both women will enter the Hell fire. The classical scholars explain why Allah (swt) makes this comparison:

Al-Samarqandi:

Then He (Allah (swt)) said {and if you plotted against him} meaning, "Help each other to hurt him and to disobey him,"then your likeness will be like the likeness of the wife of Nuh (a.s) and the wife of Lut (a.s). Both (A'isha and Hafsah) did acts that hurt the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

Source:  Bahr Al-Uloom. Vol. 3, Pg. # 380.

Al-Qurtubi:

His Statement {Allah (swt) sets forth an example for those who disbelieve} is an example set forth by Allah (swt) TO WARN A'ISHAH AND HAFSAH against opposition (to the Prophet (saw)) when they PLOTTED against the Messenger of Allah (saw).

Source: Al-Jami' Al-Ahkam Al-Qur'aan. Vol. 21, Pg. # 104.

Prophet's Nuh (a.s) and Lut (a.s) did not divorce their Kuffar wives and so it is apparent that Prophets of Allah (swt) can indeed retain evil wives under their roofs if they wish to do so. There exists no shred of evidence that for being a wife of a Prophet, automatically Jannah is granted and under no circumstances would their betrayal save them from the fire of Hell. One must appreciate that Our Lord Almighty does not reveal Verses of the Holy Qur'aan for no just cause, He (swt) would not give warning and place a similitude of A'isha and Hafsah to the wives of Nuh (a.s) and Lut (a.s) for the fun of it. In fact, the Holy Qur'aan has warned the wives of the Prophet (saw) that despite holding such a position, Allah (swt) would punish them double for any act of immorality.

O wives of the Prophet! Whoever of you commits an open Fahishah, the torment for her will be doubled, and that is ever easy for Allah. And whosoever of you is obedient to Allah and His Messenger, and does righteous good deeds, We shall give her, her reward twice over, and We have prepared for her a noble provision.

Holy Qur'aan {30:31}

A'isha In Hell Fire!

Al-Albani:

Narrated Abul Abbas Muhammad ibn Yaqoob from Abul Bakhtari Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Bishr Al-Abdi from Isma'eel ibn Abi Khalid from Qays ibn Abi Hazim narrated that: A'isha, while speaking about her burial in her house, said: "I invented an innovation after the Messenger of Allah (saw). Bury me with his wives." So, she was buried at Al-Baqi.

A'isha herself confirms she was an innovator and rightly so, for indeed she was the first to invent this species of Nasibism. She launched her war against Imam Alee (a.s) in 656 A.H, while Mu'awiyah launched his own armed rebellion a year later in 657 A.H. The rebellion of the Khariji's took place much later on. She invented both armed and non-armed Nasibism against Imam Alee (a.s) and the Ahlulbayt (a.s) and was one of its pioneers. We leave the messenger of Allah (saw) to decide what fate he decides for those who are upon innovation and those who follow such innovators.

Al-Albani:

The Prophet (saw) said "Believers' blood is equal. They have the upper hand on others. They can be custodian on those lowest. A believer soul is not in return by compensate for a non-believer. If some other has a covenant with a believer, his blood is safe during the duration of the covenant. If someone makes an innovation for himself, he bears the consequences. If he promoted it or gave refuge to an innovator, may Allah (swt), the Angels and all people curse him!"

And everytime when she came upon the Messenger of Allah (swt), he used to stand up to welcome her and took her hand and kissed her hand and seated her in his sitting place, and when the Messenger of Allah (saw) went upon her, she used to stand up and welcome him (saw) and took his hand and kissed his hand. She came upon the Messenger of Allah (saw) in his illness in which he died. He welcomed her and kissed her and told her some secret then she cried and he (saw) told her some secret again and she laughed, then I said: I had supposed of this woman excellence over the other women, and now I see that she is laughing right after weeping, so I asked her and she said: 'I will not tell you the secret.' When the Messenger of Allah (saw) died, I asked her again and she said: 'The Messenger of Allah (saw) told me that he is going to die, so I cried and then he told me that I will be the first one among his family who will join him.'

Once she came upon the Messenger of Allah (saw) in his house, he told her some secret then she cried and he (saw) told her some secret again and she laughed, A'isha said: Then I said to the other women: "I had supposed of this woman excellence over the other women, and now I see that she is laughing right after weeping", so I asked her: "What did the Messenger of Allah (saw) tell you?" And she did not reveal it. When the Messenger of Allah (saw) died, I asked her again and she said: 'The Messenger of Allah (saw) told me that he is going to die in that illness, so I became restless and cried and then he told me that I will be the first one among his family who will join him, and I became happy because of that and laughed.'

When she came to the Prophet (saw) he would stand up for her, kiss her and make her sit in his place. And when he visited her, she stood up from her seat, kissed him and gave him her place to sit down. When he was taken ill, she came to him, fell down on him, and kissed him. Then she raised her head and wept. Again, she fell down on him, and raised her head and laughed. I said (to myself). “I had thought that she was the most intelligent of women, but, after all, she is a woman.” When the Prophet (saw) died, I said to her, ‘What do you say when you fell down on the Prophet (saw) and raised your head (afterwards), you wept. Then again, you tell down, raised your head and laughed, what made you do that?” She said, “While he was alive, I had kept this secret. He informed me that he would die from that illness, so I wept. Then he informed me that I would be the quickest of his family to meet him. So at that time, I laughed."

When the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, visited her, she greeted him, stood up for him, and kissed him. She came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in his final illness and he greeted her, kissed her, and told her a secret. She wept. Then he confided something else to her and she laughed. I said to the women, 'I see that this woman is superior to other women, let she is one of them. First she wept and then she laughed.' I asked her, 'What did he say to you?' She replied, 'I would be telling a secret.' When the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, died, Faatima (s.a) said, 'He confided to me, "I am dying," so I wept. Then he confided to me, "You will be the first of my family to join me," so I was happy and pleased at that.'"

Al-Alusi:

This Belief [i.e. Faatima is Afdhal (superior)  than Maryam] was Aboo Ja'far's position (r.a) and this belief is also famous among Imams of Ahlulbayt. And this is the same belief, from which I am convinced that Faatima is the best woman among all previous and all coming women, because she is the part of Rasool Allah (saw) and also because of other reasons, with this explanation the narrations can be combinedand even if we accept that Maryam (s.a) was a messenger, still Faatima (s.a) remain Afdhal (superior) than her, because the part of the reason of creation and the master of all the creation (which is Prophet Muhammad (saw)) cannot be compared with anyone.

(Alee), whereupon he said : "It is because of three things which I remember Allah's Messenger (saw) having said about him that I would not abuse him and even if I find one of those three things for me, it would be more dear to me than the red camels. I heard Allah's Messenger (saw) say about Imam Alee (a.s) as he left behind him in one of his campaigns (Tabuk). Alee (a.s) said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah (saw), you leave me behind along with women and children?' Thereupon Allah's Messenger (saw) said to him (Alee): "Aren't you satisfied with being unto me what Aaroon was unto Musa but with this exception that there is no Prophet after me?" I (also) heard him say on the Day of Khaibar: "I would certainly give this standard to a person who loves Allah and his Messenger and Allah and his Messenger love him too". He (the narrator) said: We have been anxiously waiting for it, when the Prophet (saw) said: 'Call Alee (a.s) for me'. He was called and his eyes were inflamed. The Messenger of Allah (saw) applied saliva to his eyes and handed over the standard to him, and Allah (swt) gave him victory. And when the (following) verse was revealed "{Allah only desires to keep away any uncleanliness from you, O people of the household (Ahlulbayt), and purify you, a thorough purification}" Allah's Messenger (saw) called Imam Alee (a.s), Bibi Faatima (s.a), Al-Hassan (a.s) and Al-Hussain (a.s) and said: "O Allah, they are my family".

Narrated Qotaiba ibn Sa’eed and Muhammad ibn Hebad (with similar words) who said: narrated Hatam ibn Isma’eel from Bokair ibn Mesmar from Amer ibn Sa’d ibn Abi Waqas reported on the authority of his father that Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan ordered Sa'd and said: "What prevents you from abusing Aboo Turab (Alee)?!", whereupon he said : 'It is because of three things which I remember Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) having said about him that I would not abuse him and even if I find one of those three things for me, it would be more dear to me than the red camel. I heard Allah's Messenger (saw) say about Alee (a.s) as he left behind him in one of his campaigns (that was Tabuk). Imam Alee said to him: "Allah's Messenger (saw), you leave me behind along with women and children?" Thereupon Allah's Messenger (saw) said to him: "Aren't you satisfied with being unto me what Har'oon was unto Musa but with this exception that there is no prophethood after me". And I (also) heard the Prophet (saw) say on the Day of Khaibar: "I would certainly give this standard to a person who loves Allah and his Messenger (saw) and Allah and his Messenger (saw) love him too. He ( Sa'd ) said: 'We have been anxiously waiting for it, when he (the Holy Prophet) said': "Call 'Alee". He was called and his eyes were inflamed. He applied saliva to his eyes and handed over the standard to him, and Allah gave him victory. (The third occasion is this) when the (following) verse was revealed: "Come, let us call our sons and your sons." Allah's Messenger (saw) called 'Imam Alee (a.s), Bibi Faatima (s.a), Al-Hassan (a.s) and Al-Hussain (a.s) and said: "O Allah, they are my 'Ahl' (Progeny)."

Alee (a.s) said': "O Allah's Messenger (saw), you leave me behind along with women and children?" Thereupon Allah's Messenger (saw) said to him: "O Alee (a.s) aren't you satisfied with being unto me like Har'oon (a.s) was unto Musa (a.s) except that there is no Prophet after me?" 'And I (also) heard him say on the Day of Khaibar': "I would certainly give this standard to a person who loves Allah and his Messenger (saw) and Allah and his Messenger (saw) love him too". He (Sa'd) said: 'We have been anxiously waiting for it, when he (the Holy Prophet) said': "Call Alee for me". 'He was called and his eyes were inflamed. He applied saliva to his eyes and handed over the standard to him, and Allah gave him victory. (The third occasion is this) when the (following) verse was revealed': 'Come, let us call our sons and your sons'. Allah's Messenger (saw) called 'Imam Alee (a.s), Bibi Faatima (s.a), Al-Hassan (a.s) and Al-Hussain (a.s) and said: "O Allah, they are my 'Ahl' (progeny)."

It is authentic in Al Saheeh the narration of the christian delegation from Najran in Al Bukhari and Muslim: through Hudhaifa and Muslim is narrated through Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas who said: "When the (following) verse was revealed: " Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves... "Allah's Messenger (saw) called 'Imam Alee (a.s), Bibi Faatima (s.a), Al-Hassan (a.s) and Al-Hussain (a.s) and said: O Allah, they are my 'Ahl' (progeny).'"

Al-Hakim:

Narrated Alee ibn Abdul Rahman ibn Isa Al-Dehqan in Kufa from Al Hussain ibn Al Hakam Al-Hebri from Al Hassan ibn Al Hussain Al Ghorni from Habban ibn Alee Al-Anazi from Al-Kalbi from Abi Saleh from ibn Abbas about the saying of the Almighty: 'Say (to them), 'Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves...,till the end of the the verse 'the liars'. It was revealed upon the Messenger of Allah (saw) and Imam Alee as his soul (ourselves) and 'our women and your women' is about Bibi Faatima (s.a) and 'our sons and your sons' is about Al-Hassan (a.s) and Al-Hussain (a.s) and the invoke of the curse in about Al-Aqib and Al-Seyd and Abdulmasih and their fellows.'

Footnote: Al-Hakim said: 'The narrations are frequent from Abdullah ibn Abbas and the others in the books of Tafsir that the Messenger of Allah (saw) took the hands of Imam Alee (a.s), Al-Hassan (a.s) and Al-Hussain (a.s) and Bibi Faatimah (s.a) was behind them on the day of 'Al-Mubahila' (mutual prayer) and he (saw) said: "These are our sons and ourselves and our women, bring yourselves and your sons and your women and then we invoke the curse of Allah (swt) upon the liars."

Ibn Kathir:

The reason that this verse of mutual prayer 'Mubahala' was revealed and also what revealed before that from the beginning of the surah (chapter) is due to the christian delegation from Najran. When the Christians came they argued about Isa (a.s) and they claimed that he was divine and the son (of God), so Allah revealed this verse to refute them, as Al-Imam Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Yasar and others have said.

And Aboo Bakr ibn Mardawaih said: Narrated Sulaiman ibn Ahmad from Ahmad ibn Dawood Al-Makki from Boshr ibn Mehran from Muhammad ibn Dinar from Dawood ibn Abi Hend from Al-Shohbi from Jabir ibn Abdullah Al Ansari who said: 'Al-Aqib and Al-Tayyib came to Prophet (saw), then (after a long discussion) the Messenger of Allah (saw) invited them to invoke the curse upon each other tommorow, the Messenger of Allah (saw) took the hands of Imam Alee (a.s) and Bibi Faatimah (s.a) and Al-Hassan (a.s) and Al-Hussain (a.s) and then called the (the christians) to come, but they accepted to pay tax. Jaber said: Then the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "I swear by the one who has sent me with the truth, if they invoked the curse, the valley would rain on them fire". Jaber said: This verse has been revealed about them: { let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves } Jaber said: "Ourselves and Yourselves" are the Messenger of Allah (saw) and Imam Alee (a.s), "Our sons and Your sons" are Al-Hassan (a.s) and Al-Hussain (a.s) and the "Our women and Your women" is Bibi Faatimah (s.a).

Note: Narrated as such Al-Hakim in his Al-Mustadrak through Alee ibn Isa from Ahmad ibn Muhammad Al-Zuhri from Alee ibn Hujr from Alee ibn Mos’har from Dawood ibn Abi Hind from him (Jabir). And then says: It is Saheh (Authentic) by the criteria of Muslim and they have not narrated it. Also narrated like this by Aboo Dawoood Al-Tialesi from Sho’ba from Al-Moghaira from Al-Sho’bi Morsal, and it is most correct, and also narrated from ibn Abbas and Al Bara like this.

Al-Hakim With The Attestation Of Al-Dhahabi:

Narrated Ja’far ibn Nasir Al-Kholdi in Baghdad from Moosa ibn Aarun from Qotaiba ibn Sa’eed narrated Hatam ibn Isma’eel from Bokair ibn Mesmar from Amer ibn Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas from his father (Sa‘d) who said: "When the (following) verse was revealed: "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves". Allah's Messenger (saw) called 'Imam Alee (a.s), Bibi Faatima (s.a), Al-Hassan (a.s) and Al-Hussain (a.s) and said: "O Allah, these are my 'Ahl' (progeny)."

Footnote: Al-Hakim: This Hadeeth is Saheeh (Authentic) by the criteria of Sheikhayn (Bukhari and Muslim), and they have not narrated it.

Al-Dhahabi: It is Saheeh (Authentic) by the criteria of Bukhari and Muslim.

Al-Zamakhshari:

It is narrated that when they (the christians) were invited to invoke for cursing 'Mubahila' (mutual prayer), they said: 'We want to go back and think'. When they went, they gathered and told Al-Aqib who was their mastermind: 'O Abdulmasih, what do you think?' He replied: 'By Allah! You know O group of christians that Muhammad is a Prophet and a Messenger. He has cleared up everything about your Master (Jesus). By Allah, no folk has ever invoked the curse upon a Prophet, because their elders would not live and their youngsters will not survive. If you do not invoke the curse and do not accept his religion, leave this man and go back to your homeland'. They came to the Messenger of Allah (saw) while he was carrying Hussain (a.s) and holding hands of Hassan (a.s) and Faatimah (s.a) was walking behind them and Alee (a.s) was walking behind Faatimah (s.a) and they came to the agreed place for Mubahila (mutual prayer). The Messenger of Allah (saw) told his (Ahlulbayt): "When I invoked, you say Amin!" The bishop of Najran said to his people: 'O group of christians, I see faces if they ask Allah to fall a mountain over you, he will do it for them. So do not invoke the curse so that you perish and there remain no christian on earth till the day of judgement'. So they said: 'O Aboo Al-Qasim (saw) we decided not to invoke the curse, we confess on your religion but we remain on our religion'. The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: "So if you do not want to invoke the curse, then embrace Islam, so that whatever is for Muslims becomes for you, and whatever is on them becomes on you". They refused. He said: “So we will fight with you!". They said: 'We cannot bear the battle against Arabs, but we want to make a peace agreement so that you do not attack us and do not force us to leave our religion, in return we will pay you every year two thousand clothing's and thirty thousand steel armour'. So the Messenger of Allah (saw) agreed their peace agreement and said: "I swear by the one who owns my soul, if they invoked they would have turned into pigs and apes and mountains of the valley would have rained fire on them, and Allah would make Najran and it’s people abject and humiliate them, even the birds over the trees. And the situation of all christians would not have turned back to what it was before unless that they all would perish.
